Les Americains // Robert Frank
During 1956 – 1957, Frank traveled across America creating a portfolio of gritty images about life outside idyllic American norms. He was unable to find a publisher in the U.S. but eventually landed a book contract with Parisian publisher, Robert Delpire. The first edition of Les Americains was published in 1958 and features a cover illustration by Saul Steinberg and text written by authors such as Simone de Beauvoir and George Washington. The book was later published by the American publisher, Grove Press, and became one of the most significant photography books in the history of the medium.
